Florida Congressman Mast Joins Leading IT Educator New Horizons to Honor Veteran Student at Veterans Day Celebration

New Horizons has helped more than 1,000 veteran students graduate

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – November 12, 2018 – New Horizons Computer Learning Centers of South Florida, the world’s leading IT educator for corporations and veterans, joined with Congressman Brian Mast (FL-18) at the November 12 celebration of Veterans Day, in praise of former military men and women including the graduate receiving the school’s inaugural elite achievement award.

The Veterans Day celebration was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on November 12, the day after Veterans Day, at The Lake Pavilion, 101 S. Flagler Dr., in West Palm Beach. New Horizons has campuses in West Palm, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

“On this very special Veterans Day celebration, I extend my sincere gratitude to the men and women in uniform who have offered so much of themselves, sacrificing time with their families and friends to defend this country we all love so dearly,”  said Congressman Brian Mast.

Congressman Mast attended along with New Horizons General Manager Krista Wade, Campus President Jamie Cooper, New Horizons Chairman Gil Bonwitt and CEO Arnie Girnun.

Cooper and the Congressman presented the First Annual 2018 New Horizons Achievement Award for Student Excellence to New Horizons graduate Ron Watson, who is today employed at U.S. Southern Command. Watson, who achieved top grades while pursuing security and network certifications, worked with New Horizons to land his first IT-related job and is seeking currently to work for the National Security Agency.

“As changes in technology have accelerated and the needs of veterans have expanded, New Horizons has adapted our curriculum to position students like Ron Watson to succeed,” said Krista Wade, New Horizons General Manager. “The achievements of veterans like Congressman Brian Mast and Ron Watson are inspiring to the New Horizons leadership, staff and to students as we work together to prepare students for their best futures. We are honored and humbled to educate and prepare veterans for a career in the technology field."

Prior to his election, Congressman Mast followed in his father’s footsteps by serving in the U.S. Army for more than 12 years, earning medals including The Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal for Valor, The Purple Heart Medal, and The Defense Meritorious Service Medal. While deployed in Afghanistan, he worked as a bomb disposal expert under the elite Joint Special Operations Command. The last improvised explosive device that he found resulted in catastrophic injuries, which included the loss of both of his legs.

Congressman Mast remained on active duty following the injuries and provided expertise to the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms during his recovery process. After his retirement from the Army, he continued working in counter-terrorism and national defense as an Explosive Specialist with the Department of Homeland Security. Congressman Mast subsequently received a degree from the Harvard Extension School and volunteered to serve alongside the Israel Defense Forces.

“In 1982, when the term `Internet’ was first used, New Horizons became the first company to offer desktop application training,” explained Jamie Cooper, Campus President. “Since then we have strived to innovate and were honored in 2007 to have been named training partner to all 100 companies listed in Fortune magazine’s ranking of the nation’s 100 largest corporations. With the support of partners like Congressman Mast and world class faculty and student mentors like Ron Watson, we will continue to set the standard for innovation, particularly in the area of veterans education.”
